Dressage,is one of the most skilled forms of riding, and it represents the ultimate in harmony and understanding between horse and rider. The horse must be agile, supple and keen. Basic dressage work includes collection and extension (shortening and lengthening the horse's stride) at the walk, trot, and canter, and such lateral movements as the leg yield, in which the horse moves forward and to one side simultaneously. Dressage can be used as training for other disciplines, for competition, as in horse shows, or for exhibition.
Polo game in which two opposing teams of players mounted on horseback attempt to drive a small ball through each other's goal by means of mallets. A goal counts as one point.
Rodeo competitive sport in
which riders display their skill in activities related directly or indirectly to livestock
raising, such as riding and roping cattle and horses. Horse Shows public exhibitions
in which trained riders and horses compete with one another in executing difficult jumps
or various maneuvers. The horses may be ridden or driven, or guided by handlers on foot.
Show horses are broadly designated as either performance or breeding-class animals. A
performance-class horse is rated largely on its ability to perform such tasks as drawing,
or pulling, a guided vehicle or jumping over obstacles while carrying a rider.
Performance-class events simulate conditions encountered in hunting, working cattle, and
other activities.
